One note about phones
It works on Android phones. On an iPhone the page opens but will not connect, because Safari does not give web pages access to Bluetooth — that is a limitation of the phone, not the controller.

Do I need an account?
No. You open it and it works.
Does it need internet?
Only for the one-time install. After that the link to the unit is Bluetooth, so it works in a basement with no signal.
Is anything recorded about me?
Not about you. The unit's operating condition is recorded for technical support, so that if you call they can see what is going on.
