
A booster set is an assembly, not a single part. What it contains, how it differs from a pump controller, and which one your building needs.
In the plumbing trade "booster pump" and "pump controller" are often used interchangeably, although one is an assembly and the other a part of it. Knowing the difference is what lets you buy correctly for your building.
What a booster pump set is
A booster set is a complete pressure-boosting system, usually made up of:
- one or more pumps (two or three in parallel in larger buildings)
- a pressure vessel
- valves, a check valve and a manifold
- the control section: the panel and the brain of the system
Its purpose is to keep water pressure even on every floor, even when several units draw water at once.
Where the controller fits
The controller is that control section — the part that decides when and how the pump runs. In simple domestic booster sets, it takes the place of the mechanical pressure switch and carries the whole control logic.

When a controller is enough
If your building has one pump and your real problems are fluctuating pressure, a pump that switches on and off constantly, or a pump burning out from running dry, you do not need a whole new booster set. A smart controller on the existing pump solves all three at a fraction of the cost.
If the building's current pump is sound, replacing the mechanical pressure switch with a controller is usually the most economical way to improve water pressure.
When you do need a booster set
- High-rise buildings with heavy simultaneous demand
- Where one pump cannot supply the required flow
- Systems that need redundancy and must keep running if one pump fails
Even in those systems, a controller can be fitted to each pump to add electronic protection.

A booster set is a capacity solution; a controller is a control solution. For most residential buildings up to ten floors with a single pump, adding a smart controller both steadies the pressure and extends the pump's life.
